Scotland’s shopping capital seems to be bucking the trend if the number of new luxury and designer stores opening up in recent months is anything to go by. Clothes retailer Pretty Green and new lingerie store Boux Avenue have bagged themselves an established presence, while upmarket supermarket Waitrose opted to open its first purpose-built store here in posh Newton Mearns.

And now Cath Kidston is getting in on the act. The iconic kitsch favourite has positioned itself beautifully at the corner of Gordon Street so that anyone heading for Glasgow’s Central Station gets a bird’s eye view of its truly wondrous wares (well, they are if you’re female anyway!)

Floral bags, dresses, kitchen ware, bedroom accessories and minutiae such as spotted key ring fobs and travel ticket holders went on display in the huge emporium earlier this month. And Cath Kidston fans everywhere will be delighted to learn there’s a 15 per cent discount on all goods until June 16th to celebrate the new opening.

The Gordon Street store – unlike the small unit in Buchanan Galleries set up last year – is permanent. Store bosses said the Buchanan Galleries ‘tester’ had proved beyond doubt over its six month existence that Glaswegians loved the brand.

Cath Kidston spokesperson Jo Stavely described Gordon Street as “a natural location” and was a result of the success of the smaller ‘pop up’ store. She went on to describe the opening as “very exciting.”

Designer clothing store Pretty Green ensured their official opening received plenty of press coverage earlier this year when they hired ex-Oasis singer Liam Gallagher to lord over proceedings in its Ingram Street branch.

Meanwhile Dragons Den star Theo Paphitis made sure he got the press in on the act too when his lingerie store Boux Avenue in Buchanan Galleries opened – right next door to his former company La Senza, sparking what many have described as ‘bra wars.’

He’s believed to fallen out with La Senza’s new owners, hence his new store’s questionable positioning. The firm however – whose ‘face’ is Guy Ritchie’s girlfriend model Jacqui Ainsley – insist it’s ‘just a coincidence.’

Buchanan Galleries is the company’s only Scottish store – cue Waitrose who flung open its doors in Newton Mearns earlier this month to a wave of approval from residents.

We’re wondering who’ll be next. One thing’s for sure. We won’t have to wait long if Glaswegians keep up the shopping habit the way they’ve been doing.
